AP US History 준비, 키워드를 분석하면 길이 보인다 (1)

 

2015년 개정된 AP US History 시험에서 가장 큰 변화 중의 하나는 총 50문제가 출제되는 멀티플 초이스 섹션이 단순 암기보다 역사적 맥락 이해와 통합적인 사고를 요하는 형태로 변했다는 점이다. 시험을 준비하기 위해 문제풀이 연습을 할 때도, 주어진 문제의 정답만 신경쓰기보다는 문제의 유관 맥락과 개념 등을 동원해서 입체적으로 공부할 필요가 있다. 다음의 예를 보자.

제시문들은 독립혁명이 진행 중이던 1776년에 쓰여졌다. 토머스 페인의 상식(Common Sense)에서 발췌된 제시문이 말하고 있는 내용을 한마디로 요약하자면 “정부는 (시민의) 자유와 안전을 위해 존재한다(the design and end of government, Freedom and Security)”는 점이다. 토마스 제퍼슨이 초안을 작성한 독립선언문(Declaration of Independence) 역시 정부의 권력은 피통치자로부터 위임 받은, 포기할 수 없는 기본권을 보호하기 위한 계약(consent)으로부터 유래한 것이기에, 그 근본적인 계약을 파기한 (영국) 정부를 부정하고 새로운 정부를 구성할 수 있는 국민의 권리에 대해 언급하고 있다. 즉, 두 문헌은 공통적으로 계몽주의 사상가인 로크의 사회 계약설을 철학적 배경으로 미국 식민지의 독립 혁명을 정당화하고 있다. 이러한 분석으로 문제 1과 2의 답은 (A)와 (D)로 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 

 

약간의 분석이 더 필요한 질문은 3번이다. 독립혁명의 또다른 철학적 배경인 휘그 이데올로기는 과도하게 권력이 집중될 경우 남용될 수 있다고 주장하며, 군주에게 집중된 권력을 비판했다. 이에 따라 독립 선언 직후 만들어진 연합의 규약(Articles of Confederation)은 의도적으로 중앙정부의 권한을 제한하고, 각 주가 더 큰 권한을 가지는 형태의 연합 정부를 구상하고 있었다. 따라서 정답은 (C). 

 

문제를 풀면서 독립혁명의 원인과 전개 과정을 정리해두는 것이 다른 문제를 푸는데 도움이 된다. 특히 여기에 등장하는 Thomas Paine, Common Sense, Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence, Design and end of Government, Consent, Articles of Confederation은 내용을 완벽하게 소화해야할 주요 키워드들이다. 또한 제시 문제의 정답과는 관련이 없지만 영국의 식민지 경제 철학인 중상주의 (mercantilism)와 명백한 운명 (Manifest Destiny) 등도 AP 시험에서반복해서 등장하는 주요 키워드이므로 제대로 이해하고 있어야 한다.
