AP 준비? 에세이를 즐겨라! (11) : 에세이 기출 문제를 체크하기

 

학생들이 시험정보를 공유하는 웹사이트를 방문해 보면 “이번 해 AP US History 의 에세이 주제는 무엇이 될까?”를 예측해보려는 포스팅이 가끔 눈에 띈다. 이런 포스팅이 등장하면 누군가는 최근 몇 년간 이러 저런 부분에서 출제가 되지 않았고, 그간의 싸이클로 보건대 이번 시험에는 그 부분을 집중적으로 파는 게 좋겠다는 꽤 과학적인 (척하는) 분석을 댓글로 달아준다. 물론, “쓸데 없는 생각 말고 그냥 공부나 차분히 해라”는 핀잔을 주는 댓글의 등장 역시 예견된 수순이다. 

 

결코 적지 않은 범위를 공부해야하기 때문에 DBQ/FRQ문제의 “예측 불가능성”은 준비하는 학생들에게 “통제 불가능성”과 동의어가 될 수 있다. 여기서 에세이 주제가 무엇이 될 지를 예측해서 그것만 파고들겠다는 생각은 위험 천만한 발상이다. 하지만 AP US History 시험 준비의 거의 마지막 단계로서 과거의 기출 에세이 문제들을 시대순으로 재배치해본 후, 본인이 이해하고 있는 정도를 체크하면서 서론, 논제, 본문에 대한 아웃라인 잡기를 연습하는 “정상적인” 방법은 상당히 권할만하다. (또한 계속하다보면 생각보다 시간이 많이 드는 것도 아니다) 

 

첫째, 연대기별 (Chronological) 각 시대의 테마를 훑어볼 수 있고, 둘째 워낙 수년간 나올만한 문제는 다 출제 되었기 때문에 상당히 꼼꼼한 정리가 가능하며, 셋째, 실전에서 브레인스토밍 시간을 줄여줄 것이고, 기출 에세이 문제들이 똑같이 출제되지는 않지만 다양한 방식으로 재처리되어 재활용되기때문이다. 가령 과거의 DBQ에 출제되었던 문제 혹은 자료가 멀티플초이스 혹은 FRQ 문제에서 거의 유사한 형태로 등장하는 일은 아주 흔하다. 

 

지면관계상 기출문제 아주 일부만 추려봤다. 다음 질문에 자신있는 답을 할 수 없는 상태에서 AP 시험보러 가는 불상사는 없기를!

남북전쟁, 원인과 결과 

In the early nineteenth century, Americans sought to resolve their political disputes through compromise, yet by 1860 this no longer seemed possible. Analyze the reasons for this change. (2005b)

 

도금시대

How successful was organized labor in improving the position of workers in the period from 1875-1900? Analyze the factors that contributed to the level of success achieved. (2000)

 

20세기초, 개혁시대

1994 To what extent was late nineteenth-century and early twentieth century United States expansionism a continuation of past United States expansionism and to what extent was it a departure? 

2003b Evaluate the effectiveness of Progressive Era reformers and the federal government in bringing about reform at the national level. 

The Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression 

1986 The 1920's were a period of tension between new and changing attitudes on the one hand and traditional values and nostalgia on the other. What led to the tension between old and new AND in what ways was the tension manifested? 

2003 Analyze the responses of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration to the problems of the Great Depression. How effective were these responses? How did they change the role of the federal government? 

World War II and the Cold War 

2001 What were the Cold War fears of the American people in the aftermath of the Second World War? How successfully did the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower address these fears? 

 

The Civil Rights Movement 1995 Analyze the changes that occurred during the 1960's in the goals, strategies, and support of the movement for African American civil rights.
