더 어려운 듯, 더 쉬워진 개정판 AP US History (4) 단답형 문제들 (Short-Answer Questions) 1

 

개정 AP 미국사에서 두드러지게 달라진 또 한가지 사항은, 종전의 AP에서 에세이 문항 수가 축소되면서 새롭게 단답형 문제(Short-Answer Questions)가 도입되었다는 점이다. 단답형 문제는 총 네 문항이 출제되며, 각 문항은 세 개의 서로 연결된 하위 파트로 구성되어 있다.  논제(Thesis)와 논거(Evidence)를 바탕으로 논증적인(argumentative) 에세이를 하나 써 내야하는 DBQ나 Long Essay와는 달리, 말 그대로 각각 한 문장 정도로 (때로는 문장이 아니어도 된다) 간단하게 답하는 문제들이다. 

 

하지만 AP 미국사 시험이 단순한 지식의 암기를 테스트하는 것을 목적으로 하지 않기 때문에, 핵심에 대해 한 문장으로 설명할 수 있는 명확한 이해가 필요하다. 가령, 영토 확장과 남북 전쟁의 씨앗이 된 지역 갈등 간의 관계를 제대로 이해하고 있는지를 묻는 다음 질문을 보자. 첫 번째 하위 문항이 

 

a) Briefly explain why ONE of the following options most clearly marks the beginning of the sectional crisis that led to the outbreak of the Civil War.

• Northwest Ordinance (1787)

• Missouri Compromise (1820)

• Acquisition of Mexican territory (1848)

 

라고 주어졌다. 에세이와 마찬가지로, AP 미국사의 단답형 문항에서 정답은 없다. 좋은 답은 있다. 만약 Northwest Ordinance (1787)를 남북 간 분열의 시초라고 답하고 싶다면 “The Ordinance established slave and nonslave territory in the nation, a situation that led to numerous debates”라는 식으로, Missouri Compromise (1820)를 선택했다면 “The Compromise hardened regional identities between slave and nonslave areas as the nation expanded westward” 식으로 답변이 가능하다. 또한 Acquisition of Mexican territory (1848)를 선택했다면, “The acquisition raised debates over whether the newly annexed territories would allow or restrict slavery” 식으로 간단히 하지만 명확한 핵심을 가진 답변을 제공하면 된다. 

 

단답형 문제가 단순하지 않은 것은 보통 역사적 지식에 대한 비판적 사고를 수반하는 두번째, 세 번째 하위 질문이 이어지고, 세 개의 질문에 대한 답변이 전체 한 문제로 채점되기때문이다. 위의 질문에는 

 

b) Provide an example of an event or development to support your explanation.

c) Briefly explain why one of the other options is not as useful to mark the beginning of the sectional crisis.

 

즉, b)와 c)는 각각 간단한 추가 논거 제시와 반박자료 제시를 통해서 a)에서의 답변을 강화시키도록 요구하고 있다.  

 

b)에 대한 좋은 답들도 많다. 예를 들어 Northwest Ordinance (1787)가 공포된 지 얼마 지나지 않아 열렸던 제헌 의회(Constitutional Convention)에서 “노예주”와 “자유주”간의 갈등을 암시하는 논쟁들을 예로 들어 “The sectional debate over the Three-Fifths Clause in the proposed Constitution” “The sectional debate over inclusion of a fugitive slave law in the Constitution”라고 답할 수 있고, Missouri Compromise (1820)를 선택했다면, “The growth of Southern support for and influence in the emerging Democratic Party in the 1820s” “The creation of antislavery organizations in the 1820s by free blacks in the North”와 같은 1820년 이후 두드러진 지역 간 갈등의 예를 들어줄 수 있겠다. a)에서 멕시칸 영토 획득을 선택했다면, Sectional reactions to the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act 혹은 The rise of the free soil movement across the North 같은 답변 등이다. 

 

c)에 대해서도 “Era of Good Feeling led to an emphasis on national unity over disunity.” “Even though sectionalism increased after 1820, politicians avoided policies that might cause another major confrontation until the crises of the 1850s”  “Southern efforts to defend and preserve slavery, which were an important element in the tensions that led to the Civil War, arose before 1848, as seen in political speeches by John C. Calhoun and others.” 식의 답변들이 모두 가능하다. 

 

다만 주의할 점은 a), b), c) 세 개가 한꺼번에 한 개의 문항으로 채점된다는 점이다. 즉, 정합성(coherence)에 유의해야 한다. 예를 들어 a), b)에서 멕시칸 영토 획득이 남북전쟁에 이르는 갈등의 시발점이라고 답해놓고서 c)에서 1848년 이전에 이미 노예제를 고수하려는 남부의 노력과 남북 갈등의 징후들은 곳곳에서 드러났다는 답을 쓴다면 각각이 아무리 훌륭한 답이어도 좋은 점수를 받기 힘들 것이다. 

 

어쨌거나 위의 예는 미국사에서 매우 중요한 부분이었다. AP 시험의 준비 기간에는 19세기 미국의 경제적 발전과 영토의 확장이 남부인, 혹은 북부인이라는 정체감 형성에 어떤 역할을 했고, 정치 논쟁에 어떤 기여를 했는지를 이해해두도록 하자.
