더 어려운 듯, 더 쉬워진 개정판 AP US History (1) 멀티플 초이스

 

최근 몇 년 간 칼리지보드가 주관하는 AP 시험이 매년 과목별로 순차적으로 개정 중이다. 올해 5월 AP 시험에서는 새로운 유형의 AP US History와 AP Physics가 출제될 것이다. 특히 필자가 가르치는 AP US History에는 지금껏 누적된 “기출문제”가 없다는 데에 많은 학생들이 적지 않은 긴장을 하고 있다. 하지만 명문대를 노리는 상위권 학생들에게 AP 미국사는 포기하기도 쉽지 않은 과목이기도 하다. 

 

하지만 학생들이 가지는 불안감은 새 유형의 US History 시험이라 해도 예측 가능한 범위에 있다면 상당 부분 해소가 될 것이다. 일단 공포감은 접어두자. 칼리지보드의 공식적인 의도대로라면, 개정 AP 역시 예측 가능한 시험이며, 성실하고 꼼꼼하게 시험 준비를 한 학생들에게는 과거 유형보다 더 쉽게 여겨져야 정상이다. 

 

<오늘, 다시 읽는 미국사>는 바로 그 불안해 할 시간에 공부를 해야 할 고등학생들을 위해, 앞으로 약 두 달간에 걸쳐, AP US History 시험의 주요 변화들을 숙지하고, 어떻게 공부할 것인지에 대한 요령을 공유하는 칼럼들을 실어보려 한다. 

 

개정 AP US History에서 외견상 가장 큰 변화 중 한 가지는 아마도 멀티플 초이스다. 개정 AP와 비교해 보면 기존 AP는 단편적인 지식을 묻는 멀티플 초이스 문제가 꽤 많았다. 가령,  영국 식민지 시대의 항해법(Navigation Act)에 대해 묻는 질문이 기존 AP에서는 2001년, 다음처럼 출제가 되었다.

(B) Capitalism

(C) Mercantilism

(E) Imperialism

 

반면, 개정 AP의 멀티플 초이스는 한 이슈의 다양한 측면을 묻는 질문들로 채워진다. 다음의 예가 보여주듯, 똑같이 항해법에 대한 질문을 하더라도 맥락이 되는 문헌을 발췌하여 제공한 뒤, 항해법이라는 한 가지 이슈의 다면적 이해를 물을 수 있는 두 세가지 질문이 따라나오는 식이다.

첫 번째 문제는 영국이 북미 식민지들을 대상으로 항해법을 제정한 이유와 목적에 대해서, 두 번째 문제는 항해법이 18세기 식민지의 무역에 끼친 장기적인 영향에 대해서, 그리고 마지막 문제는 항해법이 제정된 목적(보호무역)과 연관이 있는 다른 시대 다른 입법에 대해서 묻고 있다. 시험 준비 단계에서 맥락 이해와 함께 최소한의 암기를 한 학생들이라면 (게다가 주어진 지문의 도움을 받아) 큰 무리 없이 풀 수 있는 문제들이다. 

 

또 한 가지 새로운 유형은 차트나 그래프를 통해 역사적 증거, 데이터를 해석하는 능력을 평가하는 문제들인데, 암기에 의해서가 아닌 분석에 의해서 푸는 문제들이다. 그러므로 AP US History를 준비할 때 명심할 요령이 아닌 첫 번째 요령은 이것이다. “암기하되, 이해하라.”
